“I’m proud of the whole team. Everyone worked hard for this day,” said Audi RS 3 Technical Project Leader Marvin Schwätter when the record time appeared on the board. “When we started development, we didn’t know just how quickly our compact sportscar would really be on the Nordschleife,” he explained. “But over the course of endurance testing, we determined that we could reach very good times and set a new record.”

Before the record-setting lap, driver Frank Stippler's team only adjusted the tire pressure in the Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” semi-slicks to the track conditions. “We don’t have unlimited opportunities to try for a record like this,” said Stippler. “That’s why a little is always necessary on the day when it matters – particularly with respect to tire pressure, because that also affects how the torque splitter functions. We succeeded. It was a triumphant day all around.”

Vorsprung durch Technik: The setup for the best time

The basis for the record is the interplay of top technologies. For the first time ever, a torque splitter is being used in an Audi model. It distributes torque fully adjustably between the rear wheels – controlled via amultiple disc clutch on each of the drive shafts. During dynamic driving, it increases the drive torque to the outer rear wheel with the higher wheel load. This means that on right turns, there is more torque on the left rear wheel and the opposite on left turns. The RS 3 therefore turns into the curve even better and follows the steering angle more precisely. “In general, the new RS 3 is much more agile when driving from the middle of the curve to its end and when accelerating out of the curve,” said Frank Stippler.

“For me, the torque splitter is a quantum leap in terms of agile driving.” That is particularly apparent in combination with the newly developed RS Performance driving mode, which, with its own engine and transmission characteristics, is specially calibrated for the racetrack. There, the torque splitter ensures the most neutral handling possible with little oversteering or understeering in different driving situations. This makes early acceleration possible upon exiting a curve, enabling faster lap times.

The setup is completed by the Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” semi-slick tires, which are now optional ex factory for the first time, the 19 inch ceramic braking system in the front, and the RS sport suspension plus with adaptive damper control. It individually and continuously adjusts each shock absorber to the road conditions, the driving situation, and the mode selected in Audi drive select. RS Performance mode is equipped with two setups for different racetracks – one is adjusted for comfort on uneven tracks like the Nordschleife, where minimizing vertical excitation while maintaining high lateral dynamics matters, and the other is a sporty setup for even racetracks like the Hockenheimring. With its ceramic braking system and adaptive suspension, the legendary five cylinder high-performance engine in the RS 3 delivers a maximum speed of 290 km/h (180.2 mph) – the highest in its segment. The RS 3 is also the best in its class with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.8 seconds.

Audi staff donate money for flood victims in Rhineland-Palatinate

Audi, together with its shop committee, has issued a call to its employees for donations to help flood victims. Among others, collections will go to affected areas in Rhineland-Palatinate, including around the Nürburgring. The company is also going to raise the staff’s donation to a six-figure amount.

The highly emotional total package offered by the new Audi RS 3 is rooted in its legendary five-cylinder high-performance engine. In the latest generation of the compact sports car, the 2.5 TFSI, boasting 400 hp and 500 Nm, is more powerful than ever. The RS 3 Sportback and the RS 3 Sedan both sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Equipped with the RS dynamics package plus, which includes an adaptive suspension with damper control and ceramic brakes, its top speed hits 290 km/h. This makes the Audi RS 3 the best in its class in terms of acceleration and top speed.

A question of preference: the new RS 3 driving modes

The torque splitter, equipped in an Audi for the first time, enables fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels. An electronically controlled multiple disc clutch is used on each of the drive shafts for this purpose. During dynamic driving, the torque splitter increases the drive torque to the outer rear wheel with the higher wheel load. Due to the difference in propulsive forces, the car turns into the curve even better and follows the steering angle more precisely. This results in optimal stability and maximum agility – especially when cornering at high speeds. The new technology also makes controlled drifts on closed-off tracks possible – in this case, the torque splitter directs all of the power to only one of the rear wheels, with up to 1,750 newton meters per wheel possible. Audi even developed a driving mode specifically for the RS 3 for this purpose – “RS Torque Rear” – as a drift mode with its own characteristic curve for the torque splitter.

When the newly developed RS Performance driving mode is activated, the torque splitter minimizes understeering and oversteering, thereby delivering a particularly dynamic, sporty ride along the longitudinal axis. This results in earlier acceleration out of corners and thus faster lap times. The RS Performance mode is specially calibrated to the Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” semi-slick tires, which are optionally available factory-mounted for the first time. In its standard configuration, the RS 3 sports 19-inch wheels in a 10-Y spoke design with 265/30 tires at the front and 245/35 tires at the rear.

Highly customizable: new exterior and interior colors available

The new RS 3 models offer a wide range of colors. In addition to Kyalami Green and Turbo Blue, customers can select from the metallic finishes Kemora Gray, Mythos Black, Glacier White, Tangor Red, and Python Yellow as well as the Daytona Gray pearlescent finish. The roof of the Audi RS 3 Sedan can also be ordered in the contrasting color Brilliant Black for the first time.

In the interior, the carbon-fiber trim in the instrument panel and RS sport seats with RS embossing and diamond quilting add to the racing feel. The seat upholstery is optionally available in fine Nappa leather with RS honeycomb stitching and glossy black, red, or, for the first time, green contrast stitching. RS Design packages in red and green are available to match. They include special floor mats with contrast stitching and RS embroidery as well as seatbelts with colored edges. The Design package plus includes seat corners in red or green and colored accents on the 

air vents.

First Audi with head-up display featuring blinking shift indicator

In the interior, the driver gazes upon the Audi virtual cockpit plus, featuring the RS Runway design for the first time. This setting displays RPMs in the opposite direction in a manner that visually resembles an airplane runway – the highest number of rotations in the foreground and the lowest in the background. In addition, the Audi virtual cockpit plus includes displays for g-forces, lap times, and acceleration from 0 – 100 km/h, 0 – 200 km/h, quarter mile, and eighth of a mile. The 10.1-inch touch display in the center console also displays the temperatures of the coolant, engine oil, and transmission oil, as well as the pressure of all four tires. Also available for the first time for the Audi RS 3 is a head-up display that projects relevant information onto the windshield in the driver’s direct line of sight in addition to a blinking shift indicator.

An intelligent drive system for powerful performance

The Q4 e-tron models do not emit any carbon on the road and combine the space and comfort of a luxury car in the compact class with a range that is suitable for everyday use. At up to 534 kilometers (WLTP), the Q4 Sportback 40 e-tron offers the most range out of all of Audi’s electric models. The new all-wheel-drive model also boasts a range of up to 490 kilometers (WLTP), making it perfectly suitable for everyday use as well. The two versions are available to order now, with the Q4 Sportback 40 e-tron starting at a base price including VAT of 49,500 euros and the Q4 45 e-tron quattro listed at 50,900 euros.

In the Q4 Sportback 40 e-tron, the rear axle is powered by an electric motor that delivers 150 kW (204 PS). The new quattro version uses two electric motors for its electric all-wheel drive. Together they deliver 195kW* (265 PS) of maximum power – enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h, which is electronically limited.

Carbon neutrality certified by TÜV NORD: Q4 e-tron models officially have “net-zero carbon footprint”

Audi manufactures the Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron with net-zero carbon emissions – and this has now been officially confirmed through their successful certification as “carbon-neutral products” by the independent auditing company TÜV: “Audi ensures that carbon emissions along the supply chain, throughout the production process, and in logistics, among other areas, have been proportionately avoided or reduced through the use of electricity from renewable sources. This explicitly includes the production of the vehicles’ high-voltage battery.

In addition, Audi goes further by offsetting unavoidable CO2-equivalent emissions through its support for internationally recognized carbon offsetting projects,” TÜV NORD confirms in the successful certification.

The production facility in Zwickau exclusively sources green power for production, and the battery cell suppliers are also under an obligation to only use energy from renewable sources in their production processes. Emissions that cannot currently be avoided are offset via carbon credits that fund climate change mitigation projects. These are certified by the non-profit organizations The Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard.This makes it possible to achieve complete carbon neutrality over the vehicle’s entire life cycle when it is simultaneously charged with green power during the utilization stage.

Furthermore, Audi works with its suppliers to systematically promote responsible practices in all of its vehicle projects. The company has been auditing its business partners using a sustainability rating developed in-house since 2017 in order to guarantee that production is carried out in a way that conserves resources and complies with social standards.

Convenient charging with the e-tron Charging Service

The Q4 e-tron models are extremely versatile vehicles that are ideal for everyday use. In addition to a large amount of interior space, a high level of comfort, and a range suitable for traveling long distances, drivers also benefit from rapid charging speeds. In the best-case scenario, it only takes ten minutes at a charging station to achieve a range of around 130 kilometers (WLTP).

Users of the e-tron Charging Service can now select from around 250,000 charging points in 26 European countries, including 5,841 HPC fast-charging stations. This is a huge success and a milestone when considering the fact that the charging service only launched in February 2019 with 72,000 charging points in 16 countries. Since then, not only has the number of charging points almost quadrupled, but the share of fast-charging stations has also grown significantly.

On the Transit plan, Q4 e-tron buyers do not have to pay a monthly fee for the entire first year. Moreover, they benefit from preferential terms within the IONITY network – charging costs only 31 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is roughly equivalent to the cost of charging at home in Germany. Audi owners can also easily charge their vehicles abroad without any worries, as they always pay the standard price for the country in question, depending on the charging speed – without any additional roaming fees. In other words, foreign users traveling through the country are charged at the same rates as local residents.

When looking for the nearest charging station, the myAudi app or the Audi navigation system are both helpful tools. In addition to route planning, the myAudiApp can activate supported charging points and provides information about the status of the charging station in advance. Alternatively, the charging process can also be started using the Audi charging card. Identification and billing are handled automatically in the background. In addition, the app shows the car’s current charging status.

“The new evolution meets the needs of our customers even more,” says Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “The majority of the innovations reflect the wishes that the teams have expressed to us.” Audi Sport has optimized the R8 LMS in five areas: aerodynamics, engine characteristics, air conditioning, suspension and traction control. In a global GT3 competition environment of up to ten brands, Audi Sport is thus ideally positioned. Audi Sport customer racing will contest the car’s first races still in 2021 to conclude testing of the model.

At a price of 429,000 euros (plus VAT), customers subsequently receive a race car whose characteristics are even better suited to amateur racing. Aerodynamically, the Audi R8 LMS presents itself more insensitive because a larger part of its downforce than before is now generated by the new rear wing instead of by the floor. The engine features a new intake system with improved torque characteristics. The suspension is optimized by four-way adjustable dampers for the first time. The traction control system allows further adjustments with new functionalities. Finally, the interior climate control improves comfort. Better concentration and more consistent lap times, especially over longer distances and at higher outside temperatures, are the result.

Teams can order the new technology package for the 2022 season as a complete vehicle or upgrade kit for retrofitting to existing models. The new race car will be on display in the paddock for the first time at the Spa 24 Hours.
